Internet Archive is located in California, I believe.

Are there any major public domain archiving operations on the East Coast?

Any in Philadelphia?

My particular interest is scanning of text: books, magazines, newspapers, etc.

I'd especially like to see how a professional high-volume text scanning operation works. There has to be equipment easier to run than my little Epson flatbed scanner.

well, you would not be able to duplicate our scanning scribes at home. however there is a DIY bookscanner movement and you can buy kits that use inexpensive overthecounter cameras. see http://www.diybookscanner.org/
